THE OFFICE OF WATER

The Office Of Water (OW), headquartered in Washington, D.C., ensures drinking water is safe, and restores and maintains oceans, watersheds, and their aquatic ecosystems to protect human health, support economic and recreational activities, and provide healthy habitat for fish, plants and wildlife.

THE OFFICE OF WATER
IS PROTECTING OUR NATION’S WATERS

  • Water is essential to human life and our Earth’s ecosystems.
  • While the Earth is a water planet, water in lakes, streams, and rivers makes up less than 0.01%, and groundwater makes up about 0.06%, of the earth’s water.
  • For these reasons, surface and groundwater represent a precious commodity that needs protection.

WHERE DOES YOUR WATER COME FROM?

Your water travels all the way from the City Water Treatment Plant through the Water Distribution System and the Water Main and finally it enters your house through the Water Service Connection.

At this point the volume of water is measured by the Water Meter and then the water flows to various areas inside your house.

LEAD IN DRINKING WATER

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) dedicates much of its efforts to ensure healthy environment for all Americans. EPA’s activities include identification of lead hazards in the water system and ensuring lead-free drinking water for everybody.

People can be exposed to lead through inhalation, ingestion and, to a lesser extent, dermal contact. EPA has identified some of the Lead Sources in drinking water as presented below.

  • Exposure to high levels of lead can cause severe damage to the brain, blood and kidneys.
  • Even low levels of lead exposure can permanently reduce cognitive ability and cause hyperactivity in children.
  • Long term exposure can cause reproductive harm and infertility.
  • Pregnant women are susceptible to lead, as exposure can harm the fetus, reducing growth rates and causing premature birth and/or miscarriage.

DIFFERENT LEVELS OF HARD WATER

Water is considered “hard” when it exceeds 3 Grains Per Gallon (GPG). A GPG is equivalent to 17.1 PPM, so if your water is 171 PPM, then your water hardness is 10 GPG.

The Grain Per Gallon (GPG) is a unit of Water Hardness defined as 1 Grain (64.8 Milligrams) of calcium carbonate dissolved in 1 US Gallon Of Water (3.785412 L). It translates into 1 part in about 58,000 parts of water or 17.1 parts per million (PPM). Also called Clark Degree (in terms of an imperial gallon).

NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF HARD WATER

According to The National Center For Biotechnology Information (NCBI), a part of the National Institutes Of Health (NIH), high levels of calcium and magnesium can affect several organs in the body and cause health problems. One of the most severe effects of hard water is an increased risk of Cardiovascular Disease. According to several international studies, both Heart Disease and High Blood Pressure can be caused by drinking hard water.

International Journal Of Preventive Medicine recommends softeners to anyone who can afford them, because they drastically lower the consequences by eliminating certain minerals and substituting them with beneficial ones such as sodium.

A WATER SOFTENING CYCLE

According to Popular Mechanics, a Water Softener is a mechanical appliance designed to turn Hard Water into Soft Water by getting rid of the calcium and magnesium in the hard water.

A typical water softener is plumbed into your home's water supply system and it creates a Water Softening Cycle, also called Ion Exchange.

DOES WATER SOFTENING ACTUALLY SAVE MONEY ON ENERGY?

The US Department Of Energy says that “water heating can account for 14% - 25% of the energy consumed in your home.” It is the second highest energy consuming area of a home, next to heating and cooling. The amount of minerals dissolved in water can cause it to take longer for water to heat, increasing those energy costs.

A study conducted in 2009 by the Water Quality Research Foundation in conjunction with the Battelle Memorial Institute, known as The Batelle Study, conducted tests to help determine how much energy savings a whole house water softener can provide homeowners. The results of that study indicate that untreated hard water added costs to water heating – up to 48% in some cases.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS OF SOFTENED WATER

The benefits of Softened Water, or Conditioned Water, are many and range from shinier hair, through increasing the efficiency and life span of your water appliances. Water hardness is measured by the amounts of minerals present in the water such as calcium, magnesium and in some cases, iron.

Benefits Of Softened Water

  • Safe and clean water for drinking and cooking.
  • Odor-free water.
  • No staining.
  • No buildup of mineral deposits in pipes.
  • Cleaner laundry.
  • No itchy or dry skin.
  • Fuller and softer hair.
  • Uses less soap and cleaning products.
  • Requires less cleaning.

WHAT IS ALKALINE WATER?

Alkaline Water is water that’s less acidic than regular tap water. This means it is rich in Alkalizing Compounds, including calcium, silica, potassium, magnesium, and bicarbonate.

According to Precision Nutrition, proponents of alkaline water believe that it can neutralize the acid in your bloodstream and help your body metabolize nutrients more effectively, leading to better health and performance.

However, according to Mayo Clinic, for most people, plain water is better than alkaline water. Tap Water contains different dissolved elements that influence its pH level. Pure water has a pH level close to 7. Alkaline Water Has A pH Above 7.

WHAT IS FILTERED WATER?

Water Filtration Systems typically remove more impurities than other methods.

This is because commercial water filters are specifically-designed to work with treated water that comes out of your tap at home, your office, or your business.

Many water filtration systems use activated carbon that prevents unwanted, microscopic contaminants from entering your drinking water.

Because most of harmful water impurities are carbon-based, water filters can be extremely effective in keeping your drinking water safe and healthy.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF FILTERED WATER

Health Benefits of filtered water are as follows:

  • Good minerals such as calcium, magnesium and zinc are retained when your water is filtered.
  • Contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, mercury, lead, and arsenic are removed after filtration.
  • Amounts of chlorine and other chemicals found in plain tap water are greatly reduced after filtration.
  • Better tasting and smelling drinking water because the filtration process can remove impurities and bacteria.
  • Filtered drinking water can contribute to overall good health by protecting your body from various diseases.

WHAT IS PURIFIED WATER?

Water Purification is the process of removing undesirable elements from water.

Like filtered water, Purified Water methods can remove harmful contaminants, but some purified water systems use chemicals like iodine or chlorine in their water-cleaning processes, rather than eliminating them.

Additionally, some water purification systems like reverse osmosis, remove beneficial minerals such as magnesium and calcium.

REVERSE OSMOSIS WILL
TAKE OUT THESE ELEMENTS:

  • Lead
  • Arsenic
  • Copper
  • Nitrates and nitrites
  • Chromium
  • Selenium
  • Fluoride
  • Radium
  • Barium
