COMPARE A VARIABLE-SPEED POOL PUMP WITH A REGULAR POOL PUMP

Many homeowners have a Single-Speed or Two-Speed Pool Pump installed in their swimming pool. Today, however, with the emphasis on energy conservation and saving money by reducing electrical, water and gas bills, Variable-Speed Pool Pumps are becoming the most obvious choice.

SINGLE-SPEED PUMP

  • Single-speed pump is a traditional pool pump which was in use for decades. Once turned on, it runs at a constant speed.
  • Single-speed pump uses an inefficient induction motor.
  • These are the least expensive to purchase. However, they are extremely noisy and inefficient.
  • A single-speed pool pump is the most expensive appliance in most homes costing up to $2,000 per year to operate in some areas.
  • A single-speed pool pump last typically 3-8 years.

TWO-SPEED PUMP

  • A two-speed pump is a variation of the single-speed pump. It has a low speed option, which is far more efficient than running the pump on high speed all the time.
  • Users often run the two-speed pump on low speed 24/7 and turn the pump to high when running a heater or vacuuming the pool.
  • These pumps are a bit more expensive to purchase than single-speed pumps and last typically 3- 8 years.
  • On average, a two-speed pump will save about 50%-70% on energy cost compared to a one-speed pump.

VARIABLE-SPEED PUMP

  • Variable-speed pump uses a permanent magnet motor. This type of motor used in electric cars. Users can "dial in" the exact flow rate they need for their pool and apply the golden rule of pool circulation: slower is better.
  • Reduction of the flow rate of water creates less friction, which makes the entire system much more efficient.
  • Theses pumps are much quieter, vibrate less, run cooler, last longer, are digitally controlled, and have advanced diagnostics.
  • These pumps are 90% more efficient than regular pumps and save about $50-$100 per month.

VARIABLE-SPEED POOL PUMPS OFFER HIGHER EFFICIENCY AT A LOWER COST

Variable-Speed Pool Pumps are significantly more energy efficient than single-speed pool pumps and for this reason they offer homeowners substantial savings year after year. These pumps are critical in ensuring a continuous water circulation in the pool and providing clean water in a cost-effective manner. An average Annual Cost of using each type of pump is shown below.

Single-Speed Pool Pump
Costs About $1,500 Per Year

Variable-Speed Pool Pump
Costs About $350 Per Year

IMPORTANCE OF CONTINUOUS WATER CIRCULATION IN THE POOL

Continuous Water Circulation in a swimming pool is essential for ensuring an enjoyable swimming season.

Circulation relates to the number of times the full volume of water in the pool passes through the circulation system. Circulation of the pool water allows you to Filter Your Water to ensure that it is clean. It also helps to spread the chemicals you add to the water, like stirring a cup of coffee after adding cream and sugar.

Every pool should be equipped with a Pump and a Filter, at the very least. Circulating the pool water is performed by your pump. The pump sucks in the water from the pool by the Skimmer, or the rectangle hole in your pool with the failing door. Once the water is sucked out from the pool by the pump, it passes through the pump and into the filter. The filter’s job is to clean the water by filtering out particles that are making your water dirty. After it passes through the filter, it’s pushed back into your pool through multiple jets.

BENEFITS OF CONTINUOUS WATER CIRCULATION IN THE POOL

Continuous Pool Water Circulation provides important benefits to homeowners:

  • It helps to prevent stagnant water that algae and bacteria like to grow in.
  • It helps to promote filtration, which removes big particulates that bacteria and algae like to grow on and eat.
  • It allows the sanitation system to treat the water more often which is crucial for UV, ozone, and your comfort.

With a Variable-Speed Pump, you can circulate the pool water at lower flow rates for a more prolonged period of the day without added energy consumption. This study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory confirms that variable-speed pumps are significantly more energy efficient than single-speed pumps and for this reason a variable-speed pump can be one of your best pool investments.
