WHAT IS GREYWATER?

According to GreywaterAction.org, Greywater is gently used water from your bathroom sinks, showers, tubs, and washing machines. It is not water that has come into contact with feces, either from the toilet or from washing diapers.

Greywater may contain traces of dirt, food, grease, hair, and certain household cleaning products. While greywater may look “dirty,” it is a safe and even beneficial source of irrigation water in a yard.

Basic Greywater Guidelines

  • Don’t store greywater for more than 24 hours.
  • Minimize contact with greywater.
  • Infiltrate greywater into the ground, don’t allow it to pool up or run off.
  • Keep your system as simple as possible, avoid pumps and filters that require maintenance.
  • Install a 3-way valve for easy switching between the greywater system and the sewer/septic.
  • Match the amount of greywater your plants will receive with their irrigation needs.

GREYWATER AND BLACKWATER

Domestic waste water can be categorized as either "Greywater” or “Blackwater”, depending upon the source of the water and its solids loading, as most domestic water has some degree of bacterial contamination.

  • Greywater is waste water generated in sinks, showers, bath tubs, dish washers and washing machines.
  • Blackwater is waste water generated in the toilet and kitchen.

Many homeowners are not aware about the effectiveness of Greywater Systems in substantially reducing water consumption.

For this reason, tens of thousands of gallons of water literally go down the drain every year.

LIFE CYCLE OF PROPERLY UTILIZED GREYWATER

A typical Greywater Cycle in the Greywater System is illustrated below:

  • The greywater is collected from various sources, such as bath tubs, showers, washing machines, and directed to a Septic Tank, where it undergoes initial filtration.
  • From the septic tank the greywater will flow to the Filtration System for final filtration.
  • The filtered greywater enters a Water Pump which will deliver it to various designated locations, such as toilet flushing inside the house or gardening and irrigation outside the house.
  • A typical greywater filtration system used by a family of four people can save about 40,000 Gallons per year.
