COMMON ROOFING TERMS

Most homeowners are usually not familiar with various Roofing Terms used in the construction industry. For this reason, some of the most popular terms are described in the video below.

You should also know that when roofing contractors measure a roof, they express the size of the roof in terms of Big Squares, where each Big Square is equal to 100 sq. ft.

So, next time, when you contractor tells you that your roof is 30 big squares – this means that the surface area of your roof is 3,000 sq. ft.

COOL ROOF RATING COUNCIL© 2024 CoolRoofs.org

The Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) was created in 1998 to develop accurate and credible methods for evaluating and labeling the solar reflectance and thermal emittance (radiative properties) of roofing products and to disseminate the information to all interested parties.

The CRRC also supports research into energy-related radiative properties of roofing surfaces designed to improve overall home energy efficiency.

MAIN BENEFITS OF A COOL ROOF © 2024 CoolRoofs.org

Cool Roofs provide substantial energy savings to homeowners. Because cool roofs gain less heat than normal roofs, they reduce the need for air-conditioning in summer, and heating in winter, making homes more comfortable for homeowners and their families. A cool roof can benefit a building and its occupants by:

  • Reducing energy bills by decreasing air conditioning needs.
  • Improving indoor comfort for spaces that are not air conditioned, such as garages or covered patios.
  • Decreasing roof temperature, which may extend roof service life.
  • Cool roofs can also benefit the environment, especially when many buildings in a community have them.

ASPHALT SHINGLE ROOF

More than 70 Percent of all single-family homes in the US are roofed with Asphalt Shingles, though that number is slowly shrinking thanks to more energy-efficient and durable Metal Roofing.

Fiberglass Shingles start with a fiberglass mesh mat that is covered in asphalt and topped with granules that provide color and reflect some of the sunlight. Shingles made with fiberglass are lightweight and resist tearing.

A typical comparison between an Old Shingle Roof and a New Shingle Roof is illustrated below.
