HOW DOES THE HVAC WORK?

According to Energy Upgrade California, two-thirds of all homes in California have air conditioners. Air conditioners use about 4% of all electricity produced in California.

Everybody knows how to use HVAC System, but not many people really know how this system works. If you are one of those people – now it’s your opportunity to learn about this in a user-friendly manner.

There are two types of HVAC systems as follows:

  • HVAC Package System
  • HVAC Split System

Both types of the HVAC system represent a Heating System and a Cooling System which contains the following elements:

  • Filter which filters the incoming air into the system.
  • Blower which moves the incoming air from the house into the system and blowing conditioned air back into the house.
  • Evaporative Coil which contains Refrigerants to cool the incoming hot air.
  • Condenser which contains a Compressor to compress heated air which will be then excausted by the fan outside.
  • Furnace/Air Handler which heats the incoming cold air and the warm air is then blown into the house.

All these elements of the HVAC System are connected by a Ducting System. This system can work as a Heat Pump or Air Conditioner as shown below.

HEAT PUMP (HEATING SYSTEM)

  • The HVAC System extracts cold air from the house.
  • The furnace/air handler will work as a heater and warm the cold air.
  • The warm air is sent back into the house.
  • The warm air is released back into the house.

AIR CONDITIONER (COOLING SYSTEM)

  • The HVAC System extracts hot air from the house.
  • The evaporative coil contains a refrigerant which will cool the hot air. The heated refrigerant is compressed and the hot air is exausted outside.
  • The cooled air is sent back into the house.
  • The cooled air is released back into the house.

POPULAR PRODUCT BRANDS

Some of the most popular brands of HVAC Systems are presented below in A to Z order.

DUCTLESS MINI-SPLIT SYSTEMS

Like central HVAC systems, Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioners have two main components:

  • An Outdoor Compressor/Condenser
  • An Indoor Air-Handling Unit

A conduit, which houses the power cable, refrigerant tubing, suction tubing, and a condensate drain, links the outdoor and indoor units.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF DUCTLESS MINI-SPLIT SYSTEMS

Advantages and Disadvantages of Ductless Mini-Split Systems are summarized below.

ADVANTAGES

  • Small size and flexibility for zoning or heating and cooling individual rooms.
  • Many models can have as many as four indoor air handling units (for four zones or rooms) connected to one outdoor unit.
  • Each of the zones will have its own thermostat, so you only need to condition that space when it is occupied, saving energy and money.
  • Ductless mini-split systems are also easier to install than other types of space conditioning systems.
  • Mini splits have no ducts and avoid up to 30% energy losses associated with ductwork of central forced air systems.
  • The indoor air handlers can be suspended from a ceiling, mounted flush into a drop ceiling, or hung on a wall.

DISADVANTAGES

  • The primary disadvantage of mini splits is their cost. Such systems cost about $1,500 to $2,000 per ton (12,000 BTU per hour) of cooling capacity. This is about 30% more than central systems (not including ductwork) and may cost twice as much as window units of similar capacity.
  • The installer must also correctly size each indoor unit and judge the best location for its installation.
  • Oversized or incorrectly located air-handlers often result in short-cycling, which wastes energy and does not provide proper temperature or humidity control. Too large a system is also more expensive to buy and operate.
  • Qualified installers and service people for mini splits may not be easy to find.

FILTER AND DUCT CLEANING AND REPLACEMENT

Filter And Duct Cleaning in the attic on a regular basis is just as important as brushing your teeth every morning. Most homeowners neglect this part of their home hygiene and subsequently they pay a heavy price by inhaling all the dust and dirt that accumulates in the attic during a prolonged period. As a result, you may often see a heavy dust accumulation in the vents throughout your house, and you probably wonder where is this dust coming from? No wonder, that so many people suffer from different types of breathing problems, including allergies, asthma and other lung diseases. Moreover, your HVAC system will have to work extra time to reach the preset temperature, thereby causing higher electrical bills.
