ARTIFICIAL GRASS – HOW IS IT INSTALLED?

Artificial Grass is more than just the grass itself. It’s a complete Landscaping System which consists of several critical elements, including grass fiber, green top dressing, silica sand, leveling layer of crushed granite, base structure of crushed granite, geotextile fabric, and ground subgrade. The artificial grass installation process entails several steps as follows:

  • Step 1: Make a drawing for the installation area.
  • Step 2: Remove existing grass.
  • Step 3: Excavate sub-base and install drainage (optional)
  • Step 4: Spread the base.
  • Step 5: Rake and compact the base.
  • Step 6: Roll out the artificial grass.
  • Step 7: Cut the artificial grass to fit the area.
  • Step 8: Secure the perimeter.
  • Step 9: Apply sand infill.
  • Step 10: Spread the infill.

IS ARTIFICIAL GRASS TOXIC?

According to Dr. Andrew Weil, one of the most renowned health experts:

“…. no study has identified specific health risks linked to normal exposure to levels of the chemicals found in artificial grass.”

According to the Synthetic Turf Council, lead is no longer used by U.S. manufacturers, as it was before, to promote colorfastness. For this reason, you want to make sure that the artificial grass you purchase is a U.S. manufactured Lead-Free Certified Product.

Also, EPA is conducting important study regarding the use of Recycled Tire Crumbs on playing fields to establish any potential health hazards. For this reason, it is advisable not to use this product until a clear conclusion is reached regarding this matter.

WHAT MAKES GOOD ARTIFICIAL GRASS?

Choosing the right Artificial Grass can be challenging, because there are many products on the market. Once you decide to install artificial grass, you should look for the following:

  • Good Looking.
Ask for samples and compare to real grass lawns.
  • Good Drainage.
Your grass needs to be able to efficiently drain any rainwater that may fall on it.
  • Good Blade Density.
High blade density will make your artificial grass look more realistic.
  • Good Warranty.
Your artificial grass should be covered by a warranty to defray the cost of any repairs.
  • Good Infill.
Good infill helps foster the durability and sustainability of your grass. It can also help protect the health of your children, pets, or visitors. Bacteria can grow in artificial grass and pose a health risk. Quality infill helps to inhibit the growth of bacteria, ensuring that your artificial grass is safe.

WHAT GOES UNDER ARTIFICIAL GRASS?

Artificial Grass is a surface of Synthetic Fibers made to look like natural grass. If you’re considering getting artificial grass you may be wondering, what goes under artificial turf?

The Base is the foundation that goes under your artificial grass. A properly constructed base can provide up to 30 Years of use under several synthetic grass installations. It is a large portion of your installation and it must be installed properly.

  • Large Stones.
Rocks ranging from three-eighths to three-fourths of an inch are perfect for artificial grass sub-base. The most common gravel materials used are crushed or decomposed granite, along with other aggregates.
  • Fine Materials.
It is imperative to have a filler material, called fines, to surround the larger crushed rocks for overall grass stability. Clay and lime are both common fine aggregates that easily move into the large rock gaps as the base is laid across the ground.
  • Ideal Mixture.
Most outdoor applications require preparation of an aggregate base to allow proper water drainage. In general, the ideal ratio of large rocks to fine materials is 70:30, according to the Association of Synthetic Grass Installers.
  • Weed Fabric.
Weed membrane must be laid immediately under the grass, this stops any seeds finding their way into the sand and germinating. Overlap the membrane by at least 100mm and take right to the edge of the area.

ARTIFICIAL GRASS INSTALLATION MISTAKES

  • Mistake 1: No Drainage.
One of the most overlooked aspects of artificial grass installation is adequate drainage. It is vital that water is funneled away from the grass to prevent troublesome pools of water every time it rains.
  • Mistake 2: Incorrect Measurements.
Measure your installation area at least twice, and from different directions. Make sure you’re getting the right amount of grass to cover your installation area most efficiently.
  • Mistake 3: Incorrect Base.
The coarseness of the base rock determines the amount of drainage your new lawn will have, so choose a coarser material if you have drainage issues. ¼” to ¾” crushed drain rock is usually recommended as base material.
  • Mistake 4: Not Installing A Weed Blocker.
You need to install a weed blocker layer underneath your artificial grass to discourage weeds and other plants from growing through your lawn.
  • Mistake 5: Throwing Away Your Scraps After Installation.
Keep your leftover scraps of grass! They can be used for minor repairs or patches. Furthermore, you can use them as reference swatches if you need to buy more artificial grass in the future.
  • Mistake 6: Uneven Surface.
Even the slightest bump or stone will stand out like a sore thumb on a nice smooth lawn! Take time preparing your base, remove any potential hazards and make sure the ground is completely flat.
  • Mistake 7: Not Buying Quality Artificial Grass.
There is a flood of imported cheap artificial grass in the market, which may look identical on the surface but lacks substance in quality. The result is a grass that fades, falls apart and flattens after light traffic.
